I took the day off today. Twelve hours in the office and a workout following that left me with no gas to engage with Cowboy Bebop beyond mentally sketching out how the review of episode five will work.
My general idea at this point is to test the manifesto found in episode five’s act bumpers. This will frame what should be my final words on Faye’s treatment. I don’t see her character getting better before it gets worse, and it would be too easy to spend the balance of the first arc’s reviews banging on about fan service. At the same time, Bebop’s rejection of the space opera label will let me explore the mash-up of genres, metaphors, and recurring symbols amid Spike’s bloody reconnection with his old life (and off-brand Sephiroth pictured above).
Also, this song has been haunting me all day. Is it just me, or is this a really good song?
